Aspiring Entrepreneurs Thrive at Aston

Entrepreneurship isn’t just an academic exercise at Aston University. Creating and advancing new business initiatives is at the heart of the Aston experience.

The Times Higher Education (THE) Awards — widely referred to as the ‘Oscars of higher education’ — recently recognised the university’s innovative spirit with the selection of Aston as 2020’s ‘Outstanding Entrepreneurial University.’ This prestigious recognition was based on Aston’s ‘strategic’ and ‘inclusive’ cross-institutional approach to supporting businesses, the West Midlands region and student entrepreneurship.

In the 2018-2019 academic year, Aston students and recent graduates started a total of 35 new businesses. How does Aston support entrepreneurialism with such success?

Aston Enterprise

The university’s flagship student start-up support body, Aston Enterprise is a programme that develops business ideas through interactive masterclasses taught by business leaders. In the last academic year, seventy students participated and together created 18 businesses.

Aston’s Centre for Growth

With cutting-edge research, first-class teaching and strategic partnerships, the Centre for Growth delivers practical business support to entrepreneurs. In the last five years, the centre’s programmes have supported more than 1,000 entrepreneurs, established 210 new businesses, created 650 jobs and increased revenues by £120 million.

Visionary Partnership with Medical School

Since Aston Medical School opened to its first undergraduates in September 2018, teamwork with Aston Business School has provided students with a distinctive benefit of the programme.
