Louise O’Callaghan

Can you talk a little bit about yourself and your background?

My name is Louise O’Callaghan (37), I live in the UK and I am married to Danny, we have a wonderful 8-year-old daughter and two beautiful Labradors. I have a Batchelors Degree (BSc Hons) in Biochemistry with Clinical Biochemistry from The University of Manchester. I joined Tata Steel in 2004 on the Graduate Management Programme and have progressed within the company into my current position of Project and Strategy Lead for a £25M project. Alongside the support of my manager, the MBA programme has provided me with the knowledge, tools and confidence needed for my current position.

What prompted you to pursue an online programme with Aston University? Specifically, why was online appealing to you?

I work alongside an Aston Alumni who recommended the university due to its reputation and their own positive experience there. I wanted to expand my business knowledge in order to move into more senior roles and the online opportunity enabled me to study whilst working full time and fitting studying around family life. It was extremely important to me that I didn’t have to be away from my family and that the course would be flexible enough to accommodate ‘normal life’.

What has the experience been like? Was it what you thought it would be like and has it met your expectations?

The experience has been so positive in terms of the structure and interactivity of the course, the ease of access to materials and online library, the flexibility and the engaging tutors and modules. It has far exceeded my expectations and can honestly say I have changed as a person because of it.

If you were giving someone who was considering an online course advice, what would it be?

Do it! Plan your workload and reading – the programme is challenging so don’t underestimate the commitment required, however, the more you put in, the more you will get out of it.

Would you recommend the Aston programme and if so what aspects of the course do you find appealing?

I would recommend the Aston programme (and have) to anyone that wants to commit to completing an MBA – I don’t think any other institution could offer a more relevant or interesting course. The support and encouragement from tutors and peers is outstanding.
